Sugar N Spice Dress ~FREE PATTERN~

Yesterday I was feeling kind of blah and uninspired. I think Im going through a winter, extended winter, funk. We just cant seem to stop snowing here in northern Minnesota and its April! Any how last night I needed something sweet (and not of the food variety as I swear I have eaten my way through this entire season to ease the pains of cabin fever.) I needed something wee and pretty and something that made me feel warm n fuzzy on the inside..... and here it is. I call it Sugar N Spice cuz after all that and everything nice is exactly what lil girls are made of.

Hope you enjoy giving this pattern a try as much as I enjoyed coming up with it. Its very easy, I would even say beginners could do this. Have fun <3 I have done a video tutorial for this dress and it can be found HERE...... its a work in progress, but was a fun challenge. Also pop on by and join me on my Facebook page called Strings and Things :) and join our group page for fun with other crafters and artist called Crochet Supernova :)

*Note: I will be working in different colors than the pink and chocolate but it is the same pattern. Also, the pattern is for about a 3 months size. I will be adding notes on how to adjust at a later date.*

*Went over it and made some corrections and changes. People were asking if the bodice could be done in the round so there werent so many ends to weave in and I thought that was a wonderful idea! Please always feel free to correct or make suggestions to me as I am new to pattern writing and welcome and help making it a more enjoyable pattern for you all to work*

  13. Beautiful dress, thank you so much! I did have a question about rows 1 and 2, though. You have the beginning chain (3 and 2 respectively), then say HDC in the next stitch, followed by 5 more. That gives me 6 HDCs plus the turning chain which leaves me one short on the very last set of six at the end of the row. Should the first HDC be in the same stitch as the turning chain (making the turning chain not count as a stitch) or does the turning chain count as one and there should only be 5 HDCs? I assume you are aiming for 6 stitches on each end to keep it even, although I may be wrong since I haven't worked past this first part yet.

I'm learning to crochet cause my kids are having kids and I will love to see your tutorial in a video cause is a lot easier for me than the written pattern like I told you i'm learning even when I learn fast still need to learn how to read patterns and a lot more in crochet ,thank you I read your profile you're amazing ,congratulationes for keeping yourself happy and busy with your lovely family God bless you!

  22. Row8 I need some clearing up. Do you ch5 tc in same stitch,* tc in next 3, tc ch2 tc in next stitch * repeat from * to * or tc ch2 tc in next stitch all around???

    ReplyDelete
  23. On row 9 it skips the first 4 or 5 sts at the begining and says to do tc, ch2 , tc in ch2 space. Is that suppose to be like that because it leaves a big hole in the back of the dress? Thank you :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I want to know the answer to this also. This can't be right.

      Delete
    2. I think the ch 5 is supposed to act as the first tc and the first ch2 space. So, when you join at the end of the row you actually join in the 3rd or 4th chain instead of the 5th one, leaving a hole for the tc, ch2, tc pattern to begin.

    3. Has anyone received an answer for this?

  35. Can someone please help me with end of row 3 and beginning of row 4?
Do I need to chain at the end of row 3 or turn?
I've tried everyway but the right way and its not turning out right??
    Please Help

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At the end of row 3 I did a chain 2 then turn.
Row 4 begins in same stitch as chain which will get you to the first chain 1 space. Follow pattern from there. You told the fabric so the first (where you stop) and second chain 1 spaces meet and you connect those to create the little sleeve. Hope that helps. I had the same question so I played with it a bit to get it to work.

      Delete
  36. Also, when you gold over the pattern, have the fold away from you. The HDC 18 will be across the front of the dress. You will then fold it again to create the other sleeve on the other side. Took me a minute to figure out which way it went! Lol

  38. Can someone help me with Row 4? What does (HDC in the ch 1 space just sc into) mean? I'm so confused and I have frogged this so many times already.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When it says to ch1 into both ch1 spaces to join it is actually a sc. Then, you HDC into the sc you just created. If that makes any sense.

  41. I love this pattern, it's adorable! I started working on it this evening and I must be missing something (or I am just daft), but the count keeps coming out wrong on the first row for me. When it says HDC ch1 HDC, I am doing a HDC, then chaining 1, then doing another HDC, after that I do 12 more HDC, and the one more HDC, chain one, on more HDC and then 12? Am I understanding it correctly? It would actually be 13 HDC on each side of the chain 1?
    Thanks! :-)

  43. At the end of row four it says to hdc in the next 8 are those across the back part of the sleeve.it also says ch2 and turn an the it says it again so do you ch2 or 4. Also on row 5 its hdc 30 (40st). Which sts are they? I'm counting wrong I didn't get 40 sts. I'd love to see a video tutorial.

  45. I truly would love to make this for my 2 1/2 year old Grand Daughter. I am still trying to learn how to read patterns and the video is a great help to me. Is there any way you can give me number of stitches to use for a size 3 dress? I am not able to measure her because they live 1000 miles away from me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm new to crocheting and love your design Thank you so much for offering this for free! As a beginner I would find it really helpful if you could put how many of each stitch total was done in each round and if in cases of repeating stitches you put them in brackets or use the *symbol. Either way you have found a new follower for sure!
Now for the dilemma: I've made it up to Row 7 with few problems...but now I'm a little stuck. In Row 7 I count repeating the (HDC in next 3 stitches, 2 HDC in next stitch) 20 times(making the total HDC at the end of the row 101) however the previous line Row 6 left me with 82HDC in total and after watching your video I think you added an extra HDC at the end. This in total would leave me with a total HDC in Row 7 of 102. So do I add an HDC to the end of Row 7? or are my numbers all off?

  51. Ok, I'm stumped. On Row 9:
Rnd 9: TC ch 2, TC in the ch 2 space. TC in the next 4 st. TC, ch 2, TC in next ch 2 space. Work this way all the way around to last 3 st. TC in last 3 stitches joining w a slip st to top of chain 4. chain 4.

After the TC in the next 4 st., you TC ch2, Tc in next ch 2 sp. Do you mean to continue the TC, ch2,TC or go all the way to the beginning of the row and repeat it all? * between when you need to repeat might help.

    2. Make a slipknot, ch 6, join in the round (or in other words, connect the most recent stitch to the first stitch with a slip stitch. Honestly, I prefer to do a "magic ring" instead, because I don't like the big hole in the middle of the flower. But however you achieve that first loop, read below: Pulling the yarn through the center of the circle, ch 4. (the first 2 stitches brings you up to the desired height, and the next 2 stitches brings you up to your ch across for the first loop.) Then *sc 1, ch 2* 7 more times, for a total of 8 petals--the last ch 2 you will be attaching to the 2nd ch of your original ch at the beginning of the row. Then she wants you to *sc 1, ch1, dc 2, ch1, sc* in 5 of the 8 loops you've created all the way around. It looks like she chose the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 8th, but if that looks wrong, you can probably pick which loops look best to you. Join the last sc to the first one, and turn the piece over, as the video suggests. If you're planning to change color for the second row of petals, this is the time to do it. I'd have to watch the video again to type up the 2nd row, but I hope this helps.

  66. Do you have this pattern in larger sizes? For 6 months?

  67. How would I make this for a newborn

    1. I used a "sport weight" yarn (3 strands) rather than worsted weight (4 strands) and I didn't have to change the pattern at all. It appears to be newborn size. I would have to measure it to be sure.

  79. I resized it using the Measurement chart above and came out beautiful..plus for the upper size i used one of the raglan techiques and for the skirt i simply made more rows than has this pattern. I even used a 4mm hook and came out perfectly! Thank you for the pattern and good luck everyone!

  84. I'm finding the start of round 9 unclear. I've just ch4 and am supposed to start my first tc,ch2,tch in the first ch2 sp which is 5 tcs over, it's making a huge gap. If I tc to the first ch2 sp it would make more sense. Is that what I am supposed to do????

  85. I'm wondering if there is a mistake (typo) at the beginning of round 12. It says to TC in the next 2 stitches once you join with your slip stitch. I'm wondering if that should say the next 3 stitches. If I only do 2 TC at the beginning, I end up with only a group of 6 stitches at the end instead of the 7 we are supposed to have.
